Worn leathers, a store face lift, TV commercials, and now an online store. The Brooklyn Circus has been a brand I’ve admired for years and now I can be called a part of the team…
Nah, I’m not talking about a 4th cousin of the extensive BKc fam but an actual “Hey, This is our Fall 09 varsity, have you ordered yours?” team member. The store at Nevins Street is where you can find me any day Monday through Sunday looking fly, vintage and ready to get you fit down to our Happy Socks. This is not your ordinary retail spot more so a destination stop. We all hold many tricks under this circus tent. Some say I’m they favorite but I ain’t hearing none of that. I’m about my team–BKc running back.
History Time:
The Brooklyn Circus standing firm since 2006 was founded by Ouigi Theodore, who also holds the title as the creative director. Beginning with a heavy influence from sneaker culture, the BKc has now transformed into a lifestyle brand for the modern gentlemen (and slowly evolving towards garments for the modern woman) . If you’ve followed the brand from day one you’ll see how everyone behind the scenes has grown. At this pace the 100 year plan is soon to come to fruition.
Words from Ouigi:
“The Brooklyn Circus stands for style and character through our hundred-year plan. It serves everyone who appreciates an honest story, creative freedom, and the American dream. We respect the iconic brands that have shaped the face of America, and we are following in their footsteps. Our plan is to tell the “Brown Story” through our style, our character, and the fashion industry. Brooks Brothers, J Press, Ralph Lauren, Pierre Cardin, Ives St Laurent had a plan, and so do we: to show that as people, we are not so different after all. We have more in common and are all working with the same elements towards the same thing: “self discovery.” The Brooklyn Circus is inspired by the Civil Rights movement, the Harlem Renaissance, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Prince, the Black Panthers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King. Musically: disco, reggae, and the Rude Boys of the ’70s struggling to master their music and bring better conditions to the ghettos. The Mexican Americans and Native American struggle and spirituality. The Brooklyn Circus stands for so much style and character that hasn’t been fully expressed; bits and pieces have been explored, but we hope to explore it thoroughly. That’s why we need at minimum 100 years to tell it. This is all a visual exploration waiting to unfold.” via The BKc
