The Great W

May 27, 2010  |  Individual Spotlight

You should always set goals; intern, graduate from college and then start working. And as I was sitting with mother this morning discussing my internship career, I mentioned the name Emil Wilbekin…

I’d like to assume that we all knew who the editor-in-chief of Vibe magazine was back in it’s prime: Emil Wilbekin. And as I was explaining to mother how my world works, it felt refreshing to know that I surround myself around all the Greats–it’s contagious. I told mother that I don’t want to graduate college without having any major internships under my belt, because when I finally do walk that stage I’d like a job offer–do the work now, cash the checks later.

“I don’t believe in summer school. I think you should spend your summers interning, you might get an offer if they know you“.
-Marquis Phifer

I meet Mr. Wilbekin when I use to be an intern at GIANT magazine back in 2008, he then introduced me to Coltrane Curtis. The rest will be written in my book.

Emil has been a cultural commentator on VH-1, MTV, BET, CNN, and the BBC. His writing has appeared in books like Jamel Shabaaz’s “The Last Sunday In June,” Ben Watts’ “Big Up”, and “Vibe’s Hip Hop Divas.” Emil’s journalism skills have been read in Teen Vogue, Vibe, Rolling Stone, Essence, The New York Times, Paper, Uptown, Inked, and The Chicago Tribune. He has served as the men’s wear reporter for The Associated Press. Emil has received numerous awards and honors from Pratt Institute to Out Magazine, Howard and Hampton Universities, and The Human Rights Campaign. Emil serves on The Board of Directors of Lifebeat and The Black AIDS Institute.

Emil is now the managing editor at Essence.com and you can read his blog entries here.

Sidenote: Iman & Joy Bryant are Essence.com bloggers too!

Such an excellent text! I have no clue how you were able to write this report..it’d take me days. Well worth it though, I’d assume. Have you considered selling banners on your blog?
